Grace & Peter celebrated a beautiful and intimate wedding with their immediate families in downtown Rochester, New York. Grace & Peter’s wedding day was full of so many special moments. I loved the beautiful locations that Grace & Peter chose for their wedding day. They reserved the George Eastman Garden for their family formal and a few bridal and groom portraits. Following their portraits at the garden, we went to the rooftop of the Inn on Broadway to capture some sunset portraits. They ended their day at Grace’s parents house for a small reception.
My ring is priceless to me. My grandmother had told me a year or so before we were engaged that she wanted me to have her ring. Pete then asked my parents and her for my hand in marriage, which I felt was fitting because she is the matriarch, and we have such a special relationship. I also feel a piece of my grandfather is always with me through this ring. My grandfather, Bob, passed away the same month, Pete and I started dating. Pete helped me through that difficult time, and we like to think Bob’s kind, sweet spirit lives on in our family through Pete. Bob had given my grandmother, Barbara (who we call Grabby), this ring on one of their wedding anniversaries. As Grabby puts it, they bought it once they “had some money.” Bob proposed with a pin and a promise. They actually met on a blind date! The original ring and gems are from Tiffany and co. It has since been reset for me, but the gems are the original diamond and sapphires.
I tried on about 30 gowns?? I liked a specific part of a lot of them, but there was always something I wanted a little different. I kept seeing advertisements for a custom wedding dress company called Anomalie. My mom said all along, I should do a custom dress, but I always figured it would be out of my budget. I decided to have a consultation call with them and really enjoyed the process! The pricing turned out to be well within our budget too. I had a few design calls with my stylist, and they generated an electronic sketch of my dress. They sent me swatches of fabrics to feel, and I got to pick my lace. After I approved the final sketch the dress was sent to me a few months later!! It needed a few alterations, as expected, to make it fit perfectly. Anomalie even sent me extra lace that my tailor added to my veil!
What made you choose the George Eastman Gardens and Mansion as the backdrop for your formal portraits?
I wanted a garden backdrop and the Eastman is such a beautiful/historic background. Since Pete and I are both from Rochester, I loved the idea of having such a Rochester historical landmark part of our photos.
What was your favorite moment from your wedding day?
Grace: I shared so many amazing little moments with our family that only happened because we had such an intimate wedding. The first moment that came to mind, though, was when Pete and I got to hop in our convertible and drive just the two of us to the Eastman house. It was our first moment alone as husband and wife! With our car decorated, people were honking and waving at us. It was so special to see our happiness and love spread to people we didn’t even know.
Pete: My favorite moment of the day was arriving at my Grace’s parents’ house for the reception and walking back to rejoin our families in celebration! Seeing all their smiling faces and the beautiful backyard was so memorable.
Any Advice for Newly Engaged Couples?
This is a hard one. We had a long engagement, which I really enjoyed. Obviously, since we had such a long engagement our wedding day had to be adjusted due to the pandemic. But as we reflect on our day, we are more than happy it turned out the way it did! It was truly the wedding we never knew we wanted. I don’t regret keeping our original date and downsizing. Earlier in the pandemic, when it began to be apparent that things were not going to open up soon, Pete and I discussed what was important to us and what “plan B” might look like. We decided that getting married and keeping our date was the most important thing.
My advice would be; do what YOU want! Whether invited or not, your family and friends will still share in your love no matter what you plan, big or small. You don’t want to look back and wish you did things differently. On your wedding day, you want to be with your person and feel comfortable.
